World Affairs Council of Greater Houston presents: Secretary of Defense Mattis – Call Sign Chaos – Learning to Lead
Date: September 23, 2019
Tickets & Information: Visit the World Affairs Council Website
Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead is the account of former Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis‘s storied career, from wide-ranging leadership roles in three wars to ultimately commanding a quarter of a million troops across the Middle East. Along the way, Mattis recounts his foundational experiences as a leader, extracting the lessons he has learned about the nature of warfighting and peacemaking, the importance of allies, and the strategic dilemmas — and short-sighted thinking — now facing our nation. He makes it clear why America must return to a strategic footing so as not to continue winning battles but fighting inconclusive wars.
Mattis describes the challenges and techniques of leadership at the strategic level, where military leaders reconcile war’s grim realities with political leaders’ human aspirations, where complexity reigns and the consequences of imprudence are severe, even catastrophic. Call Sign Chaos is a memoir of a life of warfighting and lifelong learning, following along as Mattis rises from Marine recruit to four-star general. It is a journey about learning to lead and a story about how he, through constant study and action, developed a unique leadership philosophy, one relevant to us all.
“Combining simplicity and thoughtfulness, Jim Mattis has produced a classic account of a lifetime of service. ‘Call Sign Chaos’ is a lesson in leadership and an evocation of humanity in the cause of peace.” — Henry Kissinger, 56th Secretary of State of the United States
“In this magnificent memoir, Jim Mattis details many important events in his career, but he also does much more: He explains how he is informed by his experiences in a way that teaches you how to learn from your own. Read, enjoy, and learn. ” — George Shultz, 60th Secretary of State of the United States
A copy of his book, Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead, is included with every ticket.

History of the Red White & Blue Golf Classic:
Brent Coon and Associates hosted the first inaugural “Red, White & Blue Golf Classic” on Oct. 4th, 2014 with proceeds going to benefit the Lone Survivor Foundation. The “Red, White & Blue Golf Classic” was sponsored by BCA, with the event being held at Brent Coon’s Country Club of Texas in Beaumont Texas. The BCA Beaumont Law Office worked tirelessly to round up teams, sponsors, prizes, donations, food and beverage and was a huge success. Attorney, Philip Kanayan, represented BCA’s Houston Office and fielded a golf team as well.
The “Red, White & Blue Golf Classic” raised over $15,000 dollars for the Lone Survivor Foundation, which helps our military veterans cope with emotional and physical trauma sustained while in the service. After the event BCA founder Brent Coon stated “We did almost all of this work in house, and everyone involved should be proud of what we accomplished getting this annual event off the ground. Next year we will be much further along with preparations and organization, and we will target $25,000.”
Helping our Armed Forces is a cause close to Brent Coon’s heart, as his father was in the Army and Mr. Coon himself was born in Hanford Army Base in Washington. Brent has a number of family members which have been recently engaged in military action in the Middle East.
