Retreat Team Spotlight – Kelsy Timas

Kelsy Timas, CEO of Guiding Wellness Institute, is a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, Yoga and Meditation teacher and Military spouse of 18 years. Kelsy first began her career in Medical Management and emergency medicine before shifting her focus to a Whole Health which led to the creation of her company, Guiding Wellness Institute. The Army brought Kelsy and her husband to Fort Bragg, NC in 2002 where they have served the past 18 years. In 2009, Kelsy responded to a deep call to support our nations wounded veterans and families at the peak of OIF and her mission became clear, “to serve those who serve”. Guiding Wellness Institute provides the largest Therapeutic Yoga Teacher Training in the nation offering adaptive and trauma-sensitive yoga training. Clinicians, military spouses and active/veteran service members are largely drawn to this comprehensive program because of the in-depth experience and preparation it provides for those entering the field today. Kelsy serves as Faculty for Warriors at Ease, a nonprofit organization founded in 2011 with a mission to increase awareness about the power of yoga and meditation and educate a network of professionals qualified to share evidenced-based practices through programs that support the health and healing of service members, veterans and their families. Kelsy and her team at GWI partner with nonprofit organizations like the Mission Continues, Team Red White and Blue and the Wounded Warrior Project to provide monthly workshops and retreats for the Fayetteville/Fort Bragg community. Kelsy is a regular education liaison for the VA and has been working with the whole health initiative for the past 10 years. In 2017-2018, GWI conducted a year long medical research study for therapy and human performance for the DoD using medical massage and Float therapy and GWI continues to lead the way as a pioneer in the industry of research-based non-pharmacological modalities in Holistic Health. Kelsy joined the Lone Survivor team as a Mindfulness/ Yoga and Meditation expert in 2017 and supports retreats in Texas as well as the expansion efforts happening in North Carolina. In 2018, Kelsy was awarded the Outstanding Woman Entrepreneur of the year award form Methodist University and the Reeves School of Business of her contribution to supporting her military community. Her greatest accomplishments are still on the horizon as she continues to serve and grow accessible and sustainable resources of health care for those who serve and have served our great nation. • Why have you chosen to support our wounded service members?

Like so many Americans, I simply feel called to support those who serve to protect our freedoms and liberty, especially those who suffer and sacrifice so much. We owe it to our brothers and sisters in arms to do everything we can to care for them during and after their service time. It is our Duty and a high honor.

  • What is it about LSF that has kept you coming back to work with our organization?

The heart of this organization resonates with my service mission so deeply. Especially the holistic approach of the retreat model, the power of the work and the connection of the service team. LSF has a very special role in welcoming the warrior home and we need this specific therapy model to bridge the gaps we have with such a large veteran population nationwide.

  • Do you have a favorite story from a retreat? If so, please share!

There are so many favorite moments from retreat to share it is hard to pick just one! What touches me most is the concept of a group of people, strangers really, gathering from all over the place and sharing 5 full days of diverse experiences and at the end there is a sense of total connection like family. I guess its like my favorite part of being a part of the military community as well, but when we end the retreat and there is such a visible shared healing and connection that was made your heart is affirmed in the work.  And it happens every time!

  • What would you like to share with the supporters who make our program possible?

You are saving and changing lives! It may not seem like a big deal to write a check, share information or attend an event but every bit makes the difference and what we are doing is deeply meaningful, brave and powerful for so many people’s lives. There is no such thing as changing only one life because that one life is like a ripple in a pond and the legacy of healing, growth and strength is compounded and unmeasurable. Thank you for helping us honor and care for our nation’s greatest and bravest among us.
